How this calculator works
Charging cost per mile is the kWh your EV uses per 100 miles, divided by 100, times the electricity price; fuel cost per mile is the gasoline price divided by miles per gallon. Each is multiplied by your yearly miles, and the 5- and 10-year figures repeat that year with prices held where they are. The state picker uses the EIA average residential price for July 2026, which is what home charging is billed at before time-of-use or EV plans; public fast charging usually costs more. Purchase price, credits, insurance and maintenance are left out: this compares energy only.

Each row runs the calculator at the state's average residential electricity price with 12,000 miles a year, an EV using 30 kWh per 100 miles and a 32 mpg car on $4.47 gasoline ($1,676 a year in every state).

Is it cheaper to charge an EV than to buy gas?
At the defaults (12,000 miles, 30 kWh per 100 miles against 32 mpg and $4.47 a gallon), a year of gasoline costs $1,676. Charging at home costs $458 in Louisiana (12.72¢/kWh) and $1,728 in Hawaii (48¢/kWh). Electricity stays cheaper per mile until it costs about 46.6¢/kWh, a price Hawaii is above.
How much does it cost to charge an EV per 100 miles?
Multiply the kWh your car uses per 100 miles by your price per kWh. At 30 kWh, that is $3.82 in Louisiana and $14.40 in Hawaii; the table lists every state.
