Published maximum weekly unemployment figures range from $235 in Mississippi to $1,208 in Washington — a 5.1× spread — with a median of $631. Finite capped dependency allowances are included where DOL publishes an upper range; Massachusetts has no aggregate allowance cap, so its row shows the $1,105 base cap before dependents.
24 states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington — use source-backed 2026 weekly-benefit-amount and duration formulas, verified against the U.S. Department of Labor's "Significant Provisions of State Unemployment Insurance Laws" and, where needed, primary state statute text.
The other 26 states use a disclosed, simplified nationwide estimate (roughly 50% of prior weekly wage, capped at the state maximum) rather than that state's exact statutory formula.
Every estimate on this site — treated or simplified — is for planning only and does not establish eligibility. Only your state unemployment agency can determine whether you qualify and your exact benefit amount.
Maximum unemployment benefit by state (2026)
This compares each state's published maximum weekly amount and maximum duration — not what a typical claimant receives. Washington's row uses ESD's current $1,208 maximum for the 2026-07-01 benefit year rather than the prior $1,152 DOL snapshot. Where DOL publishes a finite dependent-inclusive range (including IL, OH, RI, CT, and AK), the upper bound shown includes the maximum capped dependency allowance. Massachusetts is different: its $1,105 base cap can be exceeded by an uncapped $25 per eligible dependent, so no finite all-in maximum exists.

Ranked by the published maximum weekly figure, highest first. Finite capped dependency allowances are included where DOL publishes them; Massachusetts dependency benefits are excluded because state law states no aggregate cap. "Max total potential" multiplies that published figure by maximum weeks and is not an entitlement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does unemployment pay?
It varies enormously by state. Published weekly maxima range from $235 in Mississippi to $1,208 in Washington, with a median of $631 — but that is not the typical payment. Finite capped dependency allowances are included where published; Massachusetts's uncapped dependent allowance is not. Duration matters too: Massachusetts has the highest finite published total potential at $33,150 ($1,105 for 30 weeks).
Which states have source-backed unemployment benefit calculators?
24 states — Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington — use formulas verified against U.S. DOL and state-statute sources. The remaining 26 states use a disclosed, simplified nationwide estimate instead of an exact per-state formula.
Does an unemployment benefit estimate mean I qualify for benefits?
No. These calculators estimate a potential weekly benefit amount only. Eligibility (work history, separation reason, ongoing work-search requirements, etc.) is determined solely by your state unemployment agency.
