Estimate only — these are not official figures

The weekly benefit applies Montana's exact statutory formula, cited in the methodology and sources, so it matches the law when the wages you enter are accurate. The page is still labeled an estimate because its monthly figure (the weekly amount times 4.33) is not an amount the state pays and only the state agency can decide whether you qualify. The maximum weekly benefit ($805) and duration (24 weeks) come from published sources.

Do not rely on these amounts for budgeting or payment. For exact amounts, check the Montana state unemployment insurance agency (file there and use its official benefits estimator for your actual Weekly Benefit Amount determination).

How This Calculator Works

Calculation methodology and assumptions

Montana works out two weekly amounts and pays the larger: 1 percent of everything you earned in the base period, or 1.9 percent of what you earned in your two best quarters, with any cents dropped (MCA 39-51-2201(1)). The result cannot fall below $238 or rise above $805, the 20 percent and 67.5 percent of the state average weekly wage that the Department of Labor & Industry applies to benefit years beginning on or after July 1, 2026 (39-51-2201(3); an average annual wage of $61,987.12). Because that maximum resets every July, the calculator asks for it and starts at $805. The number of weeks is not a flat figure: divide your base-period total by your best quarter, and a ratio under 1.25 allows 8 weeks, rising by two weeks for each quarter-point step to 24 weeks at 3.00 or more (39-51-2204). You qualify with base-period wages of at least one and a half times your best quarter and at least $4,339.10, or with at least $30,993.56 however they were spread (39-51-2105); below both, the calculator shows no benefit. Montana pays no dependents' allowance, and the separation, work-search and partial-earnings rules are left to your claim.

Key State Information

Montana pays more weeks to people who worked all year: $9,000 in the best quarter, $18,000 in the best two and $34,000 for the year works out to $342 a week for 24 weeks ($8,208). A seasonal worker with $12,000 in the best quarter, $20,000 in the best two and $22,000 for the year gets a larger weekly amount, $380, but only 14 weeks ($5,320), because the year's total is less than twice the best quarter.

Example Calculation

Let's review the inputs that set unemployment benefits in Montana.

Montana uses its own benefit formula from state law rather than a general 50%-of-wage estimate. Enter the exact quarter/base-period wage and eligibility fields requested by the calculator; the required inputs differ by state and cannot be reconstructed safely from median household income.

Result: Published maximum weekly amount: $805. Current maximum duration: 24 weeks. These are ceilings, not a typical award; the calculator above applies Montana's source-backed formula to your own wage history, and only the state agency determines eligibility.
