How this calculator works

Enter the bill as printed, tax included. The calculator backs the sales tax out (bill ÷ (1 + rate)) to find the pre-tax amount and tips on that, or on the full bill if you choose to tip on tax. The total is the bill plus the tip; the per-person lines divide both by the number of people, rounded to the cent. The 15%, 20% and 25% lines are always on the pre-tax amount. The state picker fills the state-level tax on a restaurant bill (the separate meals rate in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont; New Hampshire's meals tax is not priced); city and county taxes come on top in many places.

Sales tax and tipped wages by state

The tip column runs the calculator on a $75.00 bill with tax included at the rate in the first column (0% where it is not priced), 20% tipped on the pre-tax amount. The wage column is what an employer must pay a tipped worker in cash before tips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more common practice. On a $75.00 bill with no sales tax, 20% is $15.00. Where 10% tax is included in a $100.00 bill, a 20% tip on the pre-tax $90.91 is $18.18, versus $20.00 on the full bill.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

15% for adequate service, 18% to 20% for good service, and 20% to 25% or more for excellent service, on the pre-tax amount. The quick-reference lines in the results show 15%, 20% and 25% of your pre-tax bill.

Does the state change what servers are paid?

Yes. Where a state allows a tip credit, an employer may pay a lower cash wage as long as cash wage plus tips reaches the full minimum each workweek. Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington allow no tip credit, so servers there get the full state minimum before tips. The table below gives each state's cash wage and rules; Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon charge no statewide sales tax.
