Registering the same $32,000 car costs $229 in its first year in Montana and $2,893 in Massachusetts — a 13× spread across states that all charge for the same thing. The median is $2,003. The table below computes all 49 from encoded source-backed formulas with per-row citations and disclosed derivations.
49 states — Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming — use source-backed title and registration formulas (based on state statutes, agency pages, official fee schedules, and disclosed government-source derivations, including county-level variation where it applies).
The other 1 states use a transparent, cost-of-living-scaled estimate instead of an exact statutory formula. That estimate is clearly labeled and editable on each calculator — it is not presented as an official DMV figure.
What vehicle registration actually costs, by state (49 states with official formulas)
Every figure below is computed from an encoded source-backed state formula for the same reference vehicle — a $32,000 passenger car, registered new by an individual. Sources include statutes, official agency schedules, and disclosed government-source derivations; each row links to its cited source record. "First year" includes registration, plates, title and purchase tax; "annual renewal" is the recurring cost after that. Purchase tax uses each state’s own STATE-level rate; we never add a guessed local rate, so those totals are verifiable floors. States that levy no sales tax at all show $0 because that is the correct figure, not a missing one.

Ranked cheapest first by first-year total, with states where you enter the local tax rate yourself listed last (their totals leave that tax out, so they are incomplete, not low). Each state links to its own calculator, where you can change the vehicle value and enter any county-level amounts. Figures are recomputed from the encoded statutory rules on every build, so this table cannot drift from the calculators themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to register a car?
It depends enormously on the state. On the same $32,000 car, the first-year total ranges from $229 in Montana to $2,893 in Massachusetts, with a median of $2,003 across the 49 states where we can verify every component. Most of that difference is purchase tax rather than the registration fee itself — the recurring annual renewal is usually a much smaller number. The table above shows each state separately.
Are all 50 state vehicle registration calculators equally exact?
No. 49 states (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming) use official DMV/statutory fee formulas verified against primary sources. The remaining 1 states use a transparent cost-of-living-based estimate — a useful starting point, but not a substitute for your local DMV's exact fee schedule.
Why do only some states have an exact DMV formula?
Vehicle registration fees are set state-by-state (and sometimes county-by-county), so building an exact, source-cited formula for all 50 states individually is an ongoing process. We only label a state "official formula" once its fee schedule has been independently verified against DMV/statutory sources.
