How this calculator works

Catering is guests times the per-guest price. The vendor subtotal adds venue, photography and video, music, flowers and decor, and attire. Sales tax is charged on catering, venue and music only (the services most often taxed; what is taxable differs by state). Tips are 18% of catering plus 15% of music, and a 10% cushion is added to the total of vendors, tax and tips. The starting prices are national figures at a cost-of-living index of 100 ($85 a guest, $10,000 venue, $3,500 photography and video, $1,800 music, $2,500 flowers, $3,000 attire); the state picker scales them by the state's C2ER index and fills its statewide sales tax rate, as this site's state wedding calculators did. Replace each with your quotes.

Index: Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC) — C2ER Cost of Living Index, Q2 2026, period Q2 2026 (100 = U.S. average). Sales tax: statewide rate only, from this site's state tax table; local rates are not included. Catered-meal rate: read from each named state source on 2026-10-19; Connecticut (7.35%), Maine (8%), Rhode Island (8%), Vermont (9%) tax meals at their own rate, so enter that rate in the sales tax field to price the catering at it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wedding cost?

With 150 guests and the national starting prices, the calculator comes to $39,727 before any sales tax, about $265 a guest, once tips and the 10% cushion are in. Scaled to each state's cost of living with its statewide sales tax, the same wedding runs from $34,073 in Oklahoma to $75,833 in Hawaii (table below). Guest count moves it most: each guest adds about $100 in food, drink and tip at the national price, $110 with the cushion.

Do you pay sales tax on a wedding?

Usually on part of it. The calculator taxes catering, venue and music at the rate you enter; Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon have no statewide sales tax, while most states add local rates on top of the statewide rate in the table. Which wedding services are taxable is set by each state, so check your vendors' invoices or your state revenue department before you budget.
