How much are utilities for a house in your state?
Pick a state, home size and household: electricity and gas use that state's EIA residential prices, as on its own calculator.
Estimated utilities for a 1,800 sq ft home with 3 people in Ohio: $324 a month ($3,888 a year).
- Electric (EIA rate)
- $165
- Natural gas (EIA rate)
- $57
- Water (modeled)
- $37
- Internet (modeled)
- $65
An estimate, not a bill: electricity and gas use Ohio's EIA residential prices; water and internet are modeled from the state's cost-of-living index. Open the Ohio utility cost calculator to enter your own rates.

For the same 1,800 sq ft / 3-occupant reference household, estimated monthly utility bills range from $245 in New Mexico to $659 in Hawaii — a 2.7× spread, with a median of $328. The table below breaks that total into electric, gas, water, and internet for all 50 states.
Every state's electricity estimate starts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's 2024 average monthly grid consumption per residential customer (Form EIA-861, Table 5.A) and combines it with the July 2026 residential price from Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A. Natural-gas bills price the modeled year-round usage at each state's EIA annual average residential price, not a single month: monthly gas prices are seasonal and peak in summer, when fixed charges are spread over little gas. Consumption and price use different release cycles; home-size/occupant scaling and gas usage are modeled. Electricity produced and consumed behind the meter, such as customer-sited solar, is not included in utility-reported grid consumption.
44 states use EIA's 2025 annual average gas price. EIA lists 2025 as not available for 6 states — Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and South Carolina — so those use their 2024 annual average instead of an invented figure, labeled as such. Each state calculator also shows the latest single month EIA reports, for reference.
Water and internet/cable costs have no single authoritative nationwide source (rates are set utility-by-utility or municipality-by-municipality), so those two figures are modeled planning estimates, scaled to each state's general cost-of-living index — clearly labeled and fully editable, never presented as government-verified.
Natural gas: each state page prices gas at EIA's annual-average residential price, converted from $/Mcf to $/therm with EIA's heat-content factor of 1,037 Btu per cubic foot (divide by 10.37; eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=45&t=8). A single month is shown only as a reference, because monthly prices swing with the season (summer runs highest, when fixed charges are spread over little gas).
Estimated monthly utility bill by state (1,800 sq ft home, 3 occupants)
Every figure is a monthly total for the same reference household — 1,800 sq ft, 3 occupants — computed with the same formula every state utility calculator on this site uses, from each state's own EIA electricity consumption and price and EIA annual-average natural-gas price. Water and internet have no authoritative nationwide government source, so those two components are modeled planning estimates scaled to each state's cost-of-living index, exactly as disclosed on every state calculator; electricity and gas are EIA-derived. Ranked highest total first.

Median estimated total for the reference household across all 50 states: $328. Water and internet/cable are modeled, cost-of-living-scaled planning estimates, not government-verified figures — electricity and gas are. Ranked by total monthly bill, highest first; each state's calculator lets you replace every default with your own home size, occupants, and actual rates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which state has the highest and lowest utility costs?
For the same 1,800 sq ft / 3-occupant reference household, Hawaii has the highest estimated monthly utility total ($659) and New Mexico has the lowest ($245) among the states measured here, with a national median of $328. Electricity and gas come from EIA state-level data; water and internet are modeled estimates, so your actual bill will vary with your home's size, occupants, and local rates.
Are the electric and gas rates on this site real government data?
Yes. Electricity consumption, electricity rates, and natural gas rates are sourced directly from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for all 50 states. Electricity consumption is the 2024 annual average grid consumption per residential customer; the electricity price is from July 2026. Natural gas is priced at each state's EIA annual average residential price, because monthly prices are seasonal. Behind-the-meter generation is excluded, while home-size/occupant scaling and natural-gas usage remain modeled. 6 states (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and South Carolina) use the 2024 annual average because EIA lists their 2025 average as not available — this is labeled on each calculator.
Are water and internet costs verified the same way as electricity and gas?
No. There is no single authoritative nationwide source for residential water/sewer or internet/cable rates — they vary by utility and municipality. Those two figures are modeled, cost-of-living-scaled starting points that you can edit to match your actual bill.
